NIST NVLAP Certification Improves Laboratory Credibility Exponentially

nvlap-how-to-apply

NVLAP stands for National Voluntary Lab Accreditation Program. This program is run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. NVLAP accreditation is available, though not required, for school, commercial and federal laboratories. If you run a business that utilizes a lab space, you may want to look into having your laboratory accredited by the NVLAP, just as you would consider Oracle certification if you were an IT professional. This accreditation status could be extremely beneficial to your business. If you are considering making your lab an NVLAP accredited facility, follow these simple steps below to start the application process today.

Step 1: Read The Handbook

The first and most important step to receiving NVLAP accreditation is to read their handbook, whether your lab develops hearable technology or researches chemical reactions. The handbook is located on the National Institute of Standards and Technology website. As you read it, consider what possible requirements you may be missing. Does your lab follow the proper test methods as approved by NIST? Are the working conditions acceptable? Could your employees pass an NVLAP proficiency test? These are important questions to ask before you begin applying for accreditation. There are several handbooks located on the NIST website. Be sure to review each one that is relevant to your laboratory’s work. If you feel certain that your laboratory meets all requirements, then you are ready to move on to step two.

Step 2: Download Adobe Reader

The next step you must follow is to download Adobe Reader. It is likely that you already have this program installed on your computer, especially if you are developing conversational intelligence software. If you do not however, you will need to complete this extra step. Adobe Reader is a free software program that will allow you to complete the NVLAP application form. In order to download it you must visit Get.Adobe.Com/Reader. There, you will be prompted to download and install the program. Once you have done this, you will be able to both read and edit PDF forms and add your own e-signature. This software program is imperative to the NVLAP application process.

Step 3: Complete The General Application Form

Once you have downloaded Adobe Reader and explored the many NVLAP handbooks, you are ready to begin applying for NVLAP accreditation. To do this you will need to visit the NIST website, NIST.gov and locate the NVLAP application page. If you do not already have a lab email account, you should create outlook email accounts for your laboratory. This page outlines the required documents, including the general application form. Open the general application form on your Adobe Reader system and begin inputting your information. This whole process should not take more than a few minutes, as long as you have the necessary information available. Once you have completed the form, you can email it to NVLAP@NIST.gov where it will be reviewed.

Step 4: Follow Completion Instructions

After you have sent your general application form there will be an unspecified waiting period. Confirmation of your acceptance should come within a few days. You will then be given a user account and further instructions for accreditation completion. As it says in the handbook, the NVLAP may visit your laboratory to ensure that it is operating under the necessary conditions. Be sure to maintain the appropriate standards of accreditation at all times. Then, your certification will be finalized.

Step 5: Display Your Certification

Once you have officially received NVLAP certification, you need to display the certificate anywhere and everywhere that you can. For example, you should certainly display a scan of your NVLAP certificate in an easily accessible area on your website. In addition, this certification should be prominently displayed in your laboratory, as well. The more visible your certification from NVLAP is, the more likely you are to be viewed as a legitimate, credible laboratory.

Additional NIST Certifications

NVLAP is not the only certification program offered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In addition, NIST offers a Voting System Testing laboratory accreditation program, or VST LAP that acts as a sort of front line to identity theft protection for voters. This program seeks to accredit Voting System Test Laboratories, or VSTLs, to conduct testing of voting systems and components. This is done with the purpose of providing a measure of confidence that these labs are capable of performing testings to meet requirements put form by the Help America Vote Act, HAVA, of 2002. If your lab specializes in voting system testing, this is an additional or alternative certification to consider pursuing.

Having an NVLAP accredited facility may significantly improve your business. and the credibility of any results you find, whether for how devices impact relationships or how chemicals interact. With the support of a third-party, you can show your customers that you care about the facilities in which your products are tested and made.
