A mirror image effect is when the two halves of an image look like identical reflections of one another. This is a classic Photoshop effect used in many a webcast that can be completed with a few simple steps. To learn more about how you can create the mirror image effect with Photoshop, check out our step-by-step guide below.
Create A New Document
Before you follow any of the steps below, you are going to want to create a blank document on Photoshop. Opening up a brand new Photoshop document allows you to customize the size dimensions of the mirror image. When you have opened it, swiftkey in the required dimensions for your project. Then, choose a resolution for the image. Once you have done this, you can move on to the first step.
Step 1: Save A Copy
The first thing you must do for the mirror image effect for your infographic tools is choose an image to be altered. Once you have done that, you will want to save a copy of the image file. It is important to note that once you start to make and save changes in Photoshop, you will not be able to return it to the original. The copy will ensure that you have a duplicate of the original that will go untouched. After you have saved a copy of the image, you can begin.
Step 2: Rename Background
You are going to need to rename the background layer in Photoshop. This is because the software does not allow you to move background layer contents. The easy fix for this is to rename the background layer. Just be sure to not use the actual word “background.” Press and hold the Alt key and double clock on the name “Background” to rename it. This will rename the layer to Layer 0, which works. Now you can move on with the rest of your Photoshop project.
Step 3: Crop And Layer
When you open the image in Photoshop, you may want to crop it to the desired area you want. This is similar to how you would do the same in Adobe Spark Video software. Trim the excess around the bottom and borders so that only the main part of the image you would like to reflect is shown. Then, duplicate the background layer. This can be done by going to “Layer” in the menu bar, clicking “New” and then selecting “Layer via copy.” This tells Photoshop to create a duplicate of the image in a layer that is separate from the background.
Step 4: Adjust Width
The next step to creating the mirror image effect on Photoshop is to double the width of the canvas you are working on. This is not something you have to worry about in Adobe Audition CS6 projects. You can do this by clicking “Image” in the menu bar and adjusting the percentages under “Canvas size.” There should be text bar available for you to type in specific numbers. Click the one beside “width” and double the percentage. This will make your canvas size twice as big. Once you click “OK” and return to your Photoshop image, you will see a blank white space of canvas beside your original image.
Step 5: Drag
Now that you have extra canvas space, you can fill that with the layer you created in Step 2. First, make sure that the layer is selected. Then, simply drag the image using your Move Tool. You can type the letter V on your keyboard as a shortcut to select the Move Tool. Once it has been selected, drag the image layer into the blank white space of canvas. Hold the Shift key down as you drag to ensure that the images line up perfectly. After you have done this, you should see two copies of the image sitting side-by-side thanks to one of the best technology solutions for photography.
Step 6: Flip
Now that the images are in place, you can make the mirror image effect happen. All you need to do is flip the image on the right horizontally, so that the matching sides of the images line up. Do this by going to the Edit menu. Choose “Transform” and then, finally, click “Flip Horizontal.” The image on the right should now look like a mirror image of the one on the left.
Step 7: Merge
Lastly, make sure that you are happy with the result before going to print on canvas. Adjust any small details and make sure that the images are lined up correctly. Once it is completely perfect, you can then merge the two images by using the Layer menu and clicking “Merge Down.” This will connect the two layers so that they create one single image.
In newer versions of Photoshop software, creating a mirror image is much simpler. It may even be easier than trying to remove background online. If you have Adobe Photo Elements 11 or similar, you can create a mirror image Photoshop project in two simple clicks. First, navigate to the Image menu. Then, select Rotate and click Flip Layer Horizontal. This will have already created the new layer for you without needing to do the step yourself.
